Allopurinol prevents development of bladder and kidney
stones and associated symptoms, including blood in the urine, urinary
tract infections, painful urination, vomiting, and frequent urination.
The medication is generally well tolerated and works quickly. Allopurinol
is a short-term treatment and is not a cure for the underlying cause
of stones.

Use this medication only as directed by your veterinarian.
For best results, use this medication in conjunction
with a diet low in purines.
Only give this medication to the pet for which it
was prescribed.
Directions:
- Give Allopurinol with meals, by mouth.
- Administer dogs 5 mg/lb of body of body weight once
daily.
- Consult your veterinarian about the correct dosage
amounts for cats and/or other animals.
- Make plenty of drinking water available during treatment
with Allopurinol.
Frequency of Use:
Give Allopurinol once daily for the prescribed period.
Bladder stones may take weeks or months to dissolve. The medication
is not a cure for the underlying cause of stones and is not usually
given long-term.
Storage:
Store Allopurinol at room temperature, away from
heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
It is a violation of Federal
Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.
Allopurinol belongs to a class of medications called
xanthine oxidase inhibitors. These medications prevent accumulation
of uric acid in the body, thereby preventing the formation of crystals
and stones in the urine. Allopurinol is not FDA-approved for use in
animals; however, it is commonly prescribed by veterinarians for this
purpose.
Warnings:
Keep Allopurinol out of reach of children and animals.
Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Allopurinol is intended for use in adult dogs only.
Do not use in puppies, kittens, or cats unless specifically told to
do so by your veterinarian. Not for human use or for giving to other
animals.
CAUTION: Do not give this medication
to pregnant or nursing dogs or to puppies.
This medication may cause drowsiness in some animals.
Other side effects may include dizziness, diarrhea, or acute arthritis.
Allopurinol may cause upset stomach. Giving with
food reduces the incidence of this side effect.
Immediately stop giving this medication and seek
veterinary care if an allergic reaction develops or if your pet develops
bloody urine, rash, fever, joint aches, severe nausea, chills, or eye
irritation.
Using this medication at the same time as amoxicillin
or ampicillin may cause a rash to develop.
Some drugs may interact with Allopurinol. Tell your
veterinarian about any over-the-counter or prescription supplements
or medications your pet is taking before beginning therapy with this
medication.
Do not use this medication in animals with a known
allergy to it or to similar medications.
