Muscle Relaxers for Dogs, Cats, and Horses
Methocarbamol is the generic form of Robaxin V and is given to dogs, cats, and horses as a muscle relaxer. Methocarbamol pet meds are used as adjunctive therapy for acute inflammatory conditions to reduce muscle spasms.
Methocarbamol is a treatment for muscle spasms. It
is used in cats, dogs, and horses. This medication relaxes muscles to
provide relief from the effects of slipped disks, various diseases,
traumas, and some ingested toxins.

The following directions represent a typical usage,
but dosing varies. Use exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Do
not administer larger doses than prescribed. Do not continue giving
this medication longer than prescribed.
Directions:
- Give cats and dogs 20 to 30 mg per pound of body
weight every 8 to 12 hours on the first day of administration.
- Reduce dose to 10 to 30 mg per pound of body weight
every 8 to 12 hours for the remainder of the prescription.
- Give horses from 4.2 to 20 mg per pound of body weight
up to 6.6 to 30 mg per pound of body weight.
- Give a missed dose as soon as you remember it. Do
not double the prescribed dose, though; if it is almost time for the
subsequent administration, just resume the regular dosing schedule.
Storage:
Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Store Methocarbamol in its original container, tightly
sealed, at room temperature.
It is a violation of Federal
Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.
Methocarbamol's exact mechanism of action is unknown.
However, it works directly on the central nervous system to relax muscles.
The effects typically set in within a few hours, but they are not long
lasting.
Methocarbamol Active Ingredient
(per tablet): methocarbamol 500 mg or 750
mg

Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Methocarbamol is only intended for use in dogs, cats,
and horses. Do not give to other animals. Use only in animals for which
this medication was prescribed. Not for human use.
Follow the specifications of your veterinarian's
prescription.
CAUTION: Methocarbamol can exaggerate
the effects of sedatives and central nervous system depressants.
Methocarbamol may cause sedation, vomiting, lethargy,
muscle weakness, salivation, and ataxia. These effects may also indicate
an overdose. Contact your veterinarian if you observe any adverse reactions
in your pet.
This product may darken an animal's urine. This
is not cause for concern.
The safety of this medication in pregnant and lactating
animals has not been established.
Not for use in animals with a hypersensitivity to
methocarbamol or guaifenesin.
Use with caution in working animals, as this product
can cause sedation.
Tell your veterinarian about all supplements and
drugs your pet takes. Check with your veterinarian before administering
any other supplements or drugs while your pet is taking Methocarbamol.
