Separation Anxiety and Behavioral Disorder Medication
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant for dogs that works by altering levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain. Balancing levels of serotonin can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and manage behavioral problems in some dogs. Negative behaviors caused by anxiety like barking, moodiness, inappropriate defecation and urination are minimized with Clomipramine (generic Clomicalm). Multiple strengths for different sizes of dogs.
Your dog's exact dose will depend on
many factors, including individual response, severity of symptoms, and
body weight. Follow the dosing instructions prescribed by your veterinarian.
Do not attempt to calculate doses on your own.
Do not allow children to handle or
administer this medication. Keep away from animals and children.
Directions:
- Give Clomipramine with food.
- Hand-feed 0.5 to 1.5 mg
per pound of body weight to your dog once per day.
- Treat cats with 0.5 mg per
pound of body weight once per day.
- Follow your veterinarian's
exact dosing instructions, even if they differ from the usual dose.
- Provide access to plenty
of clean water while your dog is taking this medication.
Frequency of Use:
Keep giving this medication to your
dog until your veterinarian tells you to stop. Symptoms may not improve
immediately. It may take days or weeks of treatment before positive
effects are observed.
Storage:
Store Clomipramine in its original
container, tightly closed and at room temperature. Keep away from moisture,
light, and heat. Do not store this medication in the bathroom or near
the kitchen sink.
Store out of reach of children and
pets.
It is a violation of Federal Law
to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Clomipramine (Anafranil)
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant.
Warnings:
Keep this product out of reach of children
and animals. Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
Clomipramine HCL is intended for use
in dogs only. It may also be used in cats. Do not give to other animals.
Not for human use.
CAUTION: This medication may
cause side effects in some animals. Possible side effects include dry
mouth, reduced appetite, drowsiness, diarrhea, vomiting, and accelerated
heart rate. Some dogs may exhibit increased aggressiveness while using
Clomipramine.
Do not give Clomipramine to dogs that
are allergic to it or to similar medications.
Use this medication cautiously and
only under veterinarian supervision in animals with hyperthyroidism,
liver disease, seizure disorders, urinary retention, and/or glaucoma.
Not for use in pregnant or nursing animals. Do not use in breeding males.
Do not use Clomipramine with monoamine
oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Wait a minimum of 2 weeks after stopping
treatment with an MAOI before giving Clomipramine. Do not use with medications
that depress the central nervous system, such as barbiturates.
Tell your veterinarian what medications
and supplements your dog is taking before beginning treatment with Clomipramine.
Consult your veterinarian before giving any new medications or supplements
to your dog while being treated with this medication.
If an overdose is known or suspected,
seek emergency veterinary care. Symptoms of an overdose include tachycardia,
heart arrhythmia, and convulsions.
Clomipramine may alter blood glucose
levels in pets.
