Clotrimazole kills yeast and fungi by preventing
production of a substance called ergosterol. Ergosterol is an essential
part of the cell membranes in fungi, and interfering with its production
causes holes to develop in the membranes. This allows unwanted substances
to enter the cells and allows cell contents to leak out. The fungi quickly
die.
