SMZ-TMP is for use in cats and dogs. Do not administer
to other animals. Do not use in humans.
Children should not be permitted to give this medication
to a pet.
Read all manufacturer instructions and precautionary
statements for safe and effective use.
Do not cease administration early because symptoms
have cleared up; this may occur before the infection is fully treated.
The directions below represent a standard regimen.
Follow the specifications of your veterinarian's prescription.
Directions:
- Administer 13 mg per pound of
body weight once per day.
- Alternatively, administer 6.5
mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours, or as your veterinarian
prescribes.
- Hand-feed tablets directly or
crush them and add them to food.
- Give with food.
- Allow your pet plenty of water
and encourage drinking.
Frequency of Use:
SMZ-TMP is given once or twice per day.
Give a missed dose as soon as you remember it. However,
if it is almost time for the next dose, just wait and resume the normal
schedule then. Do not give a double dose of this medication.
Storage:
Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Store this antibiotic at room temperature. Protect
product from moisture and heat.
It is a violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent
with its labeling.
SMZ-TMP provides a synergistic blend of sulfamethoxazole
and trimethoprim. Trimethoprim enhances the effectiveness of sulfamethoxazole.
This antibiotic works by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria,
preventing their production of proteins essential for life and reproduction.
Warnings:
Keep this product out of reach of children and animals.
Do not use or store in or near open flame or heat.
SMZ-TMP (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is for
use in cats and dogs. Do not use in other animals or humans. Only give
this medication to the animal to which it was prescribed.
Use exactly as prescribed.
Encourage your pet to drink plenty of water during
treatment.
CAUTION: Tell your veterinarian if your pet has urinary tract stones, liver
or kidney disease, or a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
Not for use in pregnant or nursing animals.
Not for use in animals allergic to this medication
or other sulfa drugs. Seek emergency veterinary treatment for an allergic
reaction.
Use with caution in animals with anemia or other
blood cell irregularities.
SMZ-TMP may increase your pet's sensitivity to
sunlight.
Sulfa crystals in the urine is a common side effect.
This is not cause for concern as long as your pet remains well hydrated.
Fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry eyes, diminished
appetite, or other minor side effects may occur. Mention them to your
veterinarian.
More serious side effects include unusual bruising
or bleeding, jaundice, ocular discharge, eye redness, squinting, anemia,
fever, joint inflammation, and kidney damage. Discontinue use and consult
your veterinarian right away if you notice any of these adverse reactions.
If you suspect or know of an overdose, seek veterinary
care immediately. Signs may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, diminished
appetite, decreased urine output, blood in the urine, jaundice, or coma.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet takes aspirin,
warfarin, glipizide, or phenytoin. SMZ-TMP may interact with these and
other drugs or supplements. Consult your veterinarian before administering
anything to your pet concurrently with this antibiotic.
